Usually a scientific magazine is online in addition to its printed issue. But to be successful on the web, people who want to establish a website, should think about what are the differences between print and online.

One of the rules a provider has to take very seriously is: online has to be up to date. Further, it is important to make use of the advantages of a very fast communication regardless of the location of the user, a multimedial presentation of contents, and the possibility to include a large amount of background informations (even from foreign sources). However, one big difficulty for online users is orientation. In most cases the information you want is somewhere in the Web, but you don’t know how to find it. One of the things a user needs is a good starting point and a kind of seeing-eye-dog.

One year ago ‚Spektrum der Wissenschaft‘ relaunched its website. In our site we present daily up to date articles about new research results exclusively for internet. These include hyperlinks to further information interesting in this context. With regard to the printed issue the user will find a table of contents which is enriched with further information about the referred topics. Interesting topics of the magazine can be discussed online. Subscribers of the printed issue get access to an online-archive of the articles for free.

Since our relaunch the number of visits has tripled. The feedback from our users give us the chance to extend our online offers in a way that is obviously appropriate to a scientific website.
