How teenagers participate in activities of scientific invention

The theme of the inquiry learning courses and activities of scientific education intended for teenagers of various nationalities: on the basis of scientific exploration, experiments and research on the optional tasks, I intend to encourage teenagers of different nationalities to go in for science and learn science and to improve their comprehensive qualities, devoting to the development of local economy.
 
The aims of our spreading science: firstly, to infuse scientific thinking into the young people and switch the knowledge from books into cognitive abilities. Secondly, to develop the young people’s capability of creative thinking. Thirdly, to sweep away the obstacles on the way to creative thinking, including how to face examination-oriented education in a right way and how to make full use of one’s talent scientifically. Fourthly, to help the young people be aware of the possibility of winning Nobel Prize and try to create a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for young people to study in. fifthly, to make students to experience every step of becoming a scientist including choosing subjects, exploration, doing experiments, writing essays and asking experts for advice.
 
My school—Bole High School lies in the northwest of China, which is inhabited by many minorities. The students consist of 28 nationalities such as Han, Mongol, Uigur, Kazak, Russian, Khalkhas and so on. Although the working language in school is Chinese, the majority of the minority students communicate in their mother languages and Chinese. In this case, the target group for us to spread science is special, and we affect the people of different nationalities via the students at school, which is so called radiate group.
 
With the wide range of participants and subjects involved in the activities, teaching stuff of up to 31 have been devoting to spreading science. Since 1995, Bole High School has been honored as the “Provincial Characteristic School in Science and Technology” “National Advanced Institution in Youngster Scientific Activities”. Mr. Liu Nanbai has been awarded as “National Advanced Counselor in Science and Technology” four times and “Intel Advanced Teacher”. He is also an expert who enjoys special allowance assessed by the State Council. Those activities have a great and active effect and have got support from different social classes. In the two big-scale scientific exploration in 2004, experts in 14 different fields such as soil, hydrology, forest, desert, ecology, environment from Boertala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture took part in them and gave much practical advice and guidance. Teachers of different subjects from Bole High School played an important role in the exploration too.
 
The theory we use during the science spreading is to use the science knowledge that have been learned to explain the natural phenomena and to question the books. The methods we use are: 1. to carry out scientific exploration with questions. 2. to seek enough related informational materials. 3. to figure out the advantages and life-force in the program. 4. to ask experts for advice and extend one’s thinking span.5. to make a careful plan and steps for the program. 6. to show the scientific results bravely.
 
Take an example of the year 2004, we have got extraordinary achievement in science spreading. We helped middles school students of minorities write more than 150 essays which were published in science works such as Walk into the Wet Land, Fly with the Birds, Give Attention to Science around Us, Inspiration From Nature and so on. Furthermore, we helped the students create 57 innovation works, among which more than 10 pieces such as East-to-West Sea Water Transfers, Lotion for Fixation of Quicksand, Application of “Theory of Pigeon’s Feathers were well received. Besides, two student representatives from our school took part in APEC in which their science essays were read to the audience. We also participated the 17th, 18th, 19th China Adolescents Science & Technology Invention Contest, having our scientific works on show and got big success.
 
In my view, we can quote from the remarks made by experts and officials in the mass media in the past two years to show how people evaluate the results of science spreading. One of the reporters from China Daily said:“ This is the scientists’ Garden of Eden where students and teachers are dreaming their science dreams.” A reporter from Xinjiang Education said: “ when it comes to creativity, people are always fixing their attention on the developed cities. But the achievements made by Bole High School show to the world that human creativity is not necessarily related to the location and position of the owner”. He added“ Mr. Liu Nanbai’s educational ideas about neutron have helped teenagers of different minorities made a series of scientific achievements. Take the example of the subject about desert, scores of creative ideas have derived from it, such as Desert Exploration Memory Hat, Desert Vegetation Basket, Desert Turtle Shell, Lotion for Fixation of Quicksand, Desert Industry and the like. In 2004, having watched the scientific achievements our school made, Aziguli, chairwoman of Xinjiang Care for the Future Generation Committee said excitedly:“ I cannot believe that science spreading is so popular and inspiring here, teenagers of all nationalities have made obvious progress in using their brain, expressing themselves , social communication and cooperation.” It is worth pointing out that only in 2004, we received 51 delegations from different circles and about 4500 students took part in all kinds of scientific activities like scientific camps, speeches and TV play making.
