Science communication in Mexico has developed in different forms during the last 20 years, with the basic support of educative institutions. Museums, conferences, tv, video and radio programmes have become important fora for this activity, not only in Mexico City but also in other important cities of the country.

Other media and communication sectors have also opened their doors. More than ten magazines, six different  newspaper sections or supplements as well as a 200 book have been committed to this activity.

Nevertheless, all of these efforts are still insufficient for a country of almost 90 million people, primarily young. On top of this, some of the publications have inevitably disappeared within the last five years and several other projects are unable to guarantee their sustainability under the current economic crisis. Part of the latest work has been directed to tackle these difficulties by varying their objectives and audience targets, but has not necessarily adapted to Mexico’s information, discussion and debate needs, ie those of a developing country.

In this paper I discuss the purposes of science communication publications, their perspectives and potential future projects, in line with the increasing tv-dependence and scarce reading habits. I also use the opportunity to present our magazine Ciencias, which has published over 50 issues during its fifteen-year existence. I talk about its objectives, its range of topics and the results we have achieved so far, including the production of a new book series and two radio projects.
