Recently in Korea, the decrease of teenagers’ interest in science has raised among scientists the significance of communication with the public more than ever. The “Mobile Science Lab” is one of the most distinguished public science programs developed in Hanyang University to bring teenagers to be engaged in activities of science and technology. The program has been designed to extend textbook science to everyday science and high-technology and thereby to provide students with opportunities to expand their understanding of science. Since the year of 2002, a vehicle specially designed for this program has visited middle and high schools all around the country. Currently the program was expanded to cover all levels of school with the support of private companies (LG Chemistry, LG Electronics), which resulted in the running of two more vehicles. The “Mobile Science Lab” program consists of several activities. First, Science Show presents scientific phenomena with associated scientific theories in the form of drama. Second, High-technology Demonstration introduces high-technological instruments to students. Third, in High- technology Science Experiment, students participate in directly manipulating materials and learn in practice. In this presentation, we provide concrete examples of “Mobile Science Lab” and discuss our model for public science program relevant to our local situation in Korea.
