Bridging the gap between Science and Society has been a challenge for decades. Today, there is evidence that we need to involve wider society in decisions about the form and direction of research and innovation to contribute to a smart, inclusive and sustainable growth of our societies. The European Commission has recently funded a 7million Euros project – the Responsible Research and Innovation Toolkit (RRI tools) to develop a series of training resources and opportunities that will help transform Research and Innovation in Europe into a process targeted at the grand challenges of our time (science for society), where deliberation and reflection are coupled with action (science with society). This paper will present the initial findings of the project and enable PCST members to participate in a discussion to help define what is meant by the term ‘Responsible Research and Innovation’ as well as to share good practice found across Europe.

Bridging the gap between Science and Society has been a challenge for decades.
