Sara Mira

This poster will be presented by Luis Azevedo Rodrigues. In a region, Algarve - Portugal, where sun is present almost every day, there is a need to health concerns about solar exposure. Moreover one should not forget that skin colour can tell about Human evolutionary history and its relation to sun exposure. Combining both aspects, health and evolutionary history, we developed three activities for children from 6 to 18 years old. In a way of science dissemination and alerting to risk factors of solar exposure, we also aim at promoting inclusion attitudes and alert for human diversity in the globe. Lagos Ciência Viva Science Centre have been developing, during the last 6 years, several activities for general public and schools. In the scope of the project Saúde a 4 Tempos (Health at 4 Seasons) financed by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, we have developed and implemented these activities on the scope of summer subject - Sun, Skin and Cancer. The students activities were developed for three age levels: from 6 to 9 years; from 10 to 14 years; and from 15 to 17 years. The IBL activities explore concepts and notions on the existence of different skin colors, the physical consequences to skin when exposed to sun without protection, and on the relation between skin cancer development and sun exposure. We also have developed a talk for school community (mainly high school students and teachers) were the topics skin color, human evolution, sun exposure, vitamin D and skin cancer were addressed. During the implementation of the activities on 2015, we have visited 12 schools, interacting with 554 students of all 3 levels, and the activities were evaluated by students' inquiry.
