How science television is changing in this YouTube age

Eric de Kruijk

Television, books and other media had had a long monopoly on knowledge and information. With the beginning of the digital age this rapidly changed. Wikipedia and YouTube are by the Dutch youth (≤25) seen and used as major source of information (32% in 2014). YouTube is an easy accessible platform for everyone. And with the contemporary smartphones everyone is able to shoot a video with science experiments. Some of these videos are more popular than the 'most popular' Dutch science television show; Het Klokhuis. As a science writer for Het Klokhuis I observe these changes with great interest and I would like to analyses these changes with you by showing some insightful, confronting and funny examples of our science shows, international science shows versus very popular YouTube science movies.
