Background: European Commission promotes communication of research results.
Especially FP6 and FP7 request active and targeted dissemination of research project results. Successful implementation of this objective in research projects is a real challenge. Objectives / Hypotheses: Empirical evidence from a large scale Network of Excellence project indicates that active dissemination of research results is a challenging task. Opportunities and threats of implementing an effective communication platform in a large scale, networking project can be identified and structured to reveal their origins and nature. This understanding is a basis for developing and shaping appropriate measures and policies.

Methods: Following questions will be addressed:
‐ How are the communication and dissemination requirements met in a large scale FP6 Network of Excellence?
‐ What factors influence the design and implementation of a communication and dissemination dimension of such projects?
‐ Who are the actors involved in such project, what are their habits, goals and strategies? ‐ What are the good practices to bridge the cardinal gaps between research (or researchers) and users of research results (direct and potential)?

Results and Conclusions: Policy recommendations for improved implementation of communication and dissemination dimensions of research projects.
