Background In 2004, the Swedish National Agency of Higher Education carried out an evaluation on how Swedish universities and university colleges cooperate with the surrounding society. The aim was to provide perspectives and knowledge about the ways in which higher education institutions (HEI) cooperate with the surrounding society. One aspect of the evaluation was how HEI work to develop and maintain a dialogue between researchers and the rest of the community. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations were made, for example activities like research communicationpopular education seemed to be based on the enthusiasm of and commitment of individual researchers and that they should be offered greater support and more incentives so that these activities could be developed further.

Now, the evaluation is about to be followed up. Of special interest are improvements of how HEIs carry out research communicationpopular education today and if the recommendations have been carried through.

Purpose The paper will present the findings in the new study when it comes to how HEI take part in the knowledge and innovation system.

The study will be reported in the beginning of March 2008 and the paper will be finalized at the same time.
