Based on the review of current situation of public scientific literacy in China and international comparative studies, the paper puts forward the concept of "living science " and analyses the main characteristics of it: connecting tightly with basic living demand; putting instrumental and practical result in the priority; giving importance to accessiblility and perception; integrating with social knowledge; connecting inherently with cultural tradition deposition. If we can say that science is refinement of everyday experience and thinking, then approaching to scholarly "academic science" from "living science " which particularly emphasized on common sense, become an essential way for public understanding of science. Also, it has an important implication: "academic science " (R. K.Merton, UCDOS) should be linked with "post‐academic science " (J. Ziman, PLACE ) and "living science " (BISSC) to conduct the activities of science popularization in order to guide the public understanding and using science in daily life.
