La ‘Longue Duree’ of popular science, 1820 - present (UK & USA)

Martin W. Bauer   London School of Economics and Political Science

Quantitative indicators collated from a number of historical and more recent studies indicate that the amount of science coverage in the print media is not constant, but comes in waves.

The paper will establish evidence for these waves, locate ‘high’ and ‘low’ periods of science coverage on the basis of the available data, and explore national differences or synchronicity.

The analysis of ‘waves of science in the media’ may be a step towards clarifying the functions of science journalism, both in terms of intented and unintended consequences for science-in-society.
