Topics 1-The possibility and modality of interaction between S&T and Religion and its impact on public policy 2-The relationship between popularization of S&T and Religion: Confrontation or Cooperation? 3-Assessment of the experiences of various countries concerning mutual impacts of religion and the phenomenon of popularization of S&T Sustainable scientific and technological development of societies depends on popularization and public understanding of S&T. Challenges however, arise when attempts are made to popularize S&T in societies with deep-rooted religious beliefs and values; beliefs and values which are held and cherished by the majority of the populace. Such beliefs and values would, no doubt, play some roles in turning such societies into scientifically and technologically educated ones. The status of these beliefs and values pose a challenge for all those who are involved in popularization of S&T in religious societies. In the proposed session, the speakers can explore the very nature of the ways in which the phenomenon of development of S&T and religion interact and find out whether it is logically possible to expect a meaningful cooperation between the two or whether the two are poles apart. In this respect a study of national and regional experiences by the speakers could be enlightening. It might be possible to trace the differences (if any) in the methods of assessment of public understanding of science in religious societies and those with less religious inclination. Another topic for discussion would be the policies adopted in various countries with different attitudes towards religion in promoting public understanding of science.
