During my practice of conception of scientific exhibitions I observed a tight relationship between the fine result of an exhibition and its conception and realisation process. After 7 years working in this field, a disappointing museographic result appears (Man & Health an exhibition for adults at the Cité of sciences and Industry). I decided then to question the process and the methods commonly used and turned to new way of working.

In these methods a scientific preprogram is no more the first step of conception. The scientific community is involved at very focuses steps and is always mixed with non scientific specialists to make a distance, to leave the aim of the scientific sphere and shift into the aim of the museological sphere. Depending on the step of the process and the context it can be philosophers, politics, architects, artists, moviemakers…. People representing the public are also involved very
early in the process, directly or through animators of institutions who know them well. Finally it leads to new type of scienfic exhibits. I will talk about the conception of the Medicine at the time of Califa (IMA of Paris), of the Thematic parks of Health and Nutrition in Expo 2000 of Hanover and, of an European travelling exhibition for China prepare for 2001 on new technology in transport, water, energy and telecommunications.

I will discuss the different way of working of conceptors coming from different fields because the process depends mainly on the persons who work into the project. Each of us transfer from its preceding professional skill to the conception of exhibition its behaviour and methods. Thus at he beginning of my practice -construction of the city of science and Industry- I used methods from the biological experimental research and my behaviour was quite different from the people who were teachers from "lycée" and "college", journalists, architect, artists, and  the ones coming from human sciences.  Now methods have been nearly fixed in this big institution after several conflicts between directors of the conception department. The one they use there is a mix between tools coming from scientific teachers and culture youth co-ordinators, architecture and administration management with formalised as scientific pre-programme, scenario or programme followed by scenographic APS and APD.

An evolution in the methods of conception of scientific exhibitions.
