This  paper  analyzes  all  daily  information  relating  to  health  and  medicine  published  in  the  five Spanish newspapers with the greatest circulation (ABC, El País, La Vanguardia, El Periódico and El Mundo)  that  was  sistematically  monitored  over  a  period  of  five  years  (1  January  1996  to  31 December 2000). A data base was created based on this information, where each entry corresponds to each journalistic article or piece of information collected.

Analysis  of  the  data  was  established  in  two  stages.  The  firts  stage  involved  a  descriptive  and quantitative  analysis  of  the  material,  with  special  emphasis  on  the  most  frecuently  recurring journalistic and medical topics, as well as the type of sources referred to in the different journalistic pieces.  In  the  second  stage,  an  analysis  was  made  on  the  content  of  all  the  journalistic  pieces recorded based on content analysis.

General analysis includes: Evolutive study of the media coverage about health in the Spanish press. Detection of the most interesting media items and determinant comprehension factors.Comprehension factors of newsmaking. Public intervention analysis and their perception throw the letters to the editor's section.

Media case analysis includes: The most important issues analysis of content ,News evolution comprehension, press focus attention and attitude.Study of the agents and the sources of information.The general analysis and the media case was studied under diferents points of view since the study of the process of newsmaking to the impact of the diferents topics of actuality into the agenda of the journal.A  five  year  time  frame  provides  perspective  to  compare  and  asses  some  applied  aspects  of  health coverage.
